Lex Maria

The primary purpose of a notification under Lex Maria is to establish an objective investigation into the cause of a serious injury or risk of serious injury that has occurred, thereby preventing similar events from occurring in the future.

Another aim is that the patient (or his/her family/relatives) concerned should, as far as possible, gain clarity through the investigation as to what actually happened.

Each healthcare provider is responsible for identifying and investigating deviations. If the investigation reveals that there is a significant patient safety risk, a notification under Lex Maria must be made to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO). The investigation includes an analysis of the course of events and causes, as well as proposals for action.

More information is available on the website of the Health and Social Care Inspectorate
